American Regionalism: Visions from the Heartland

Charles Albert Morgenthaler

American, 1893–1980

Born in Hallsville, Missouri, Charles Morgenthaler received his art education at the University of Missouri and the Art Institute of Chicago. He later moved to St. Louis where he became a successful illustrator and mural painter.

In Dinner Bell in the Missouri Ozarks, Morgenthaler represents the modest lifestyle of rural Missourians. Everyday life is celebrated, as farm workers and family members rush home to enjoy a midday meal.
