Jar in the Form a Man with Disfigured Face![]() Jar in the Form of a Man with Disfigured Face Peru, Moche, ca. 200-600 CE Pottery (73.241) Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Westreich Moche artists emphasized naturalistic portrayals of the world they witnessed around them, including a range of maladies. Some scholars have suggested that the facial disease depicted here is leishmaniasis, a disease caused by protozoan parasites and transmitted by the bite of certain species of sand fly. One form of that disease, mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, particularly afflicts the nose and mouth. |
