Moche artists emphasized naturalistic portrayals of the world they witnessed around them, including a range of maladies. Some scholars have suggested that the facial disease depicted here is leishmaniasis, a disease caused by protozoan parasites and transmitted by the bite of certain species of sand fly. One form of that disease, mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, particularly afflicts the nose and mouth.
