, Guest Curator Greig Thompson, ed. (Museum of Art and Archaeology, 2006) This exhibition catalogue features the ceramic and glass works created by Missouri-born ceramicist, Glenn Lukens. At a time when an emphasis on design and decoration dominated American pottery production, Glen Lukens cast aside tradition to explore the expressive potential of ceramic materials. In the first half of the twentieth century, Lukens pioneered a bold approach to pottery, producing simple, massive forms that married bright colors to raw surfaces. His innovations were a boon to the California dinnerware industry of the 1930s. He also worked with glass, paying special attention to the development of the vessels’ colors. An award-winning ceramicist and teacher, Glen Lukens helped change the way we see and interpret ceramics today. 40 pages, soft cover, 36 color plates, ISBN 0-910501-36-X; $9.95 . |

, Norman Land, ed. (University of Missouri Press, 1999) In 1961, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation gave fourteen Old Master paintings to the Museum of Art and Archaeology. These form the core of the Museum’s Western art collection. Representing the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the collection demonstrates not only the chronological progression of styles but also the geographic range of Italian art. The paintings include altarpieces, portraits, sacred and mythological images, and genre pieces. The catalog also recognizes the cultural impact and historical significance of one of America’s great collectors. An introductory essay by Marilyn Perry, then Kress Foundation president, recounts the history of the Kress Collection. 120 pages, 32 b&w illus., 18 color, ISBN 0-8262-1241-7; $39.95 : www.umsystem.edu/press |

, Susan Langdon, ed. (University of Missouri Press, 1997) These nine essays were originally presented at a symposium held on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus in conjunction with the exhibition From Pasture to Polis: Art in the Age of Homer. The essays, by some of the most prominent scholars in the field, reflect a diversity of approaches to studying the development of the early Iron Age. They cover four major topics: evidence for the rise of the polis, sources and uses of artistic form and iconography, development in cults around Greece, and issues of poetry and narrative. Linking these topics are the themes of social change; mortuary practices; growth and use of sacred places; social, literary, and artistic applications of style; and Greece and the outside world. 247 pages, 63 b&w illus., ISBN 0-8262-1099-6; $34.95 . |
