Volunteer Opportunities

As the third-largest visual-arts museum in Missouri and one of mid-Missouri’s educational and cultural centers, the Museum of Art and Archaeology welcomes the support offered by volunteers from the community. Volunteers serve essential roles in Museum support services and educational outreach programs. Several areas in which volunteers can contribute their time and talents include:

The Docent Program
Volunteers who have an interest and/or background in art, art history, classical studies, and related areas are encouraged to consider volunteering in the Museum’s docent program. At no cost these volunteers receive training and education through the Museum of Art and Archaeology curators and staff, and through courses offered at the University. Docents who have completed their training lead tours through the Museum’s galleries for school age as well as adult groups. The service and educational outreach provided by the docents is invaluable to the Museum’s mission.

Museum Store Volunteer
Volunteers can give their support by staffing the Museum of Art and Archaeology’s Museum Store. The Museum Store is sponsored by Museum Associates, the “friends” group of the Museum. All proceeds from the store aid the organization in its sponsorship of educational programs, special events, acquisitions, and overall financial support of the Museum. Volunteer shifts in the Museum Store are scheduled for two hours once a week. Museum Store volunteers are good-will ambassadors to the public and representatives of community support.

Student Volunteers
Many opportunities exist for University and area-high-school students with an interest in museum work, art, or art history to volunteer at the Museum of Art and Archaeology. Opportunities to work in the areas of exhibition preparation, educational programming, and research are readily available. Student volunteers have the possibility of working closely with original works of art and artifacts while gaining insights and knowledge from Museum curators, educators, and staff members. It’s a wonderful experience being a part of the inner workings of the museum world.
